ADHD Assessments

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
At Mind at Peace Psychiatry, we are deeply committed to supporting individuals who are neurodivergent, particularly those who have ADHD.
Our expert care is designed to alleviate the significant impact of ADHD on career and academic progression, relationships, and self-esteem.

Referral Process

To obtain an ADHD assessment, you will need a referral from your GP, specifying the evaluation is for a “291 assessment for ADHD”. At this stage, we are limiting our assessments to patients from Victoria and Tasmania only. Our current wait time for ADHD assessments is around 4 weeks. However, wait times can fluctuate significantly, so it is best to check with our friendly reception team for the most up-to-date information.

Before the Assessment

Our dedicated admin team is here to support you every step of the way as you prepare for the assessment. We understand that the process can be overwhelming, and we strive to make it as smooth and stress-free as possible. There is some paperwork involved before the evaluation, including ADHD screening questionnaires, but we will guide you through it.
We also ask that you provide some supporting information – this might involve a paragraph or two from your loved ones about what they have noticed about you, such as issues with concentration or hyperactivity. It is also helpful to have some school reports (if you can find any).
We understand that paperwork can be challenging, especially for our patients who may struggle with it. However, it is a necessary part of a comprehensive assessment, and we strive to minimise the paperwork you receive.

During the Assessment

The assessment typically lasts for an hour and will be an opportunity for the psychiatrist to confirm the diagnosis by inquiring about your medical history.

Following the Assessment

Following the appointment, the psychiatrist will write a report to your doctor within a few days, outlining clear treatment guidelines and a management plan.
Our psychiatrist may ask your doctor to complete a full set of blood tests, as well as an ECG and a blood pressure test, before prescribing any ADHD medications. Should you wish to prevent any delays in treatment, ask your doctor to do these screening tests even before the review with the psychiatrist.

Your GP will remain the prescriber for any treatment recommended by the psychiatrist. Should our psychiatrist recommend stimulants for ADHD, your GP will need to apply for a ‘permit’ to prescribe these, and once they receive this, they can commence prescribing.

Assessments for Spectrum Disorder

Please note we are no longer doing assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Therapists

For our patients with ADHD, we work in partnership with a highly experienced team of therapists who offer ADHD counselling and coaching, an ADHD support group and a self-paced, online course called ADHD Ambition. Please note: Create Balance does not offer ADHD Assessments. The Create Balance team comprises mental health social workers and psychotherapists (Shannon, Dan, Louise and Samuel) and mental health counsellors (Dean and Claire). Create Balance is situated at 253 Latrobe Terrace, Geelong and offers both face-to-face and Telehealth appointments.
The contact number is (03) 5222 1553, or you can email admin@createbalance.com.au or visit www.createbalance.com.au.
