Dr Shehara (Sunny) Gunasekara
Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Shehara (Sunny) Gunasekara is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and has a subspecialty in psychogeriatrics. He undertook his medical degree at Monash University and completed his postgraduate training in Adelaide. He has worked in psychiatry for over 10 years. He has managed a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and neurocognitive disorders, in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Following his service in public hospitals and outpatient clinics, Dr Gunasekara has been practising telepsychiatry, managing general psychiatry patients, providing assessments for medical reports related to citizenship applications, the Australian Tax Office, and licensing authorities, and treating patients under WorkCover and Compulsory Third Party Insurance.

He also holds a Certificate in Psychiatric Permanent Impairment (AMA Guides, 5th Edition) and a Certificate in Psychiatric Impairment Rating Scale.

Dr Gunasekara is a firm believer in the importance of collaborative care and maintains that working as a team with the patient and their family is crucial in the practice of psychiatry—and, more broadly, in medicine.
