Driver’s Licence Psychiatric Assessments
Maintaining a driver’s licence can be essential for independence, employment, and daily life. In some situations, the Department of Transport or your treating doctor may request a psychiatric assessment to ensure it is safe for you to continue driving.
At Mind at Peace, our consultant psychiatrists provide comprehensive driver’s licence assessments (Item 291) to evaluate mental health factors that may impact driving capacity. These assessments are completed with care, respect, and confidentiality, and focus on supporting both road safety and your personal wellbeing.
Your assessment includes:
-
A detailed clinical interview and mental health history
-
Review of relevant medical and treatment records
-
Evaluation of cognition, attention, and judgement
-
A clear report outlining fitness to drive and any recommendations for review or support
Our psychiatrists are experienced in working with both patients and referring GPs to meet AustRoads and state transport authority requirements.
Referral requirements:
A referral from your GP is required under MBS Item 291 (psychiatric assessment and report). Please ensure your referral mentions explicitly that the purpose is a driver’s licence assessment.
