IVF and Fertility Treatment Assessments

Fertility journeys can be emotionally complex and deeply personal. At Mind at Peace, our psychiatrists provide compassionate, comprehensive psychiatric assessments for IVF and fertility treatment (MBS Item 291), supporting patients and couples through every step of the process.

These assessments are often requested by fertility clinics, counsellors, or the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) to support applications for compassionate release of superannuation to help fund treatment.

Why a Psychiatric Assessment May Be Required

Under ATO guidelines, individuals may apply to access part of their superannuation to cover medical expenses, including IVF or assisted reproduction.

To do this, the ATO requires two medical reports:

  1. A report from your treating specialist (e.g. fertility specialist or obstetrician), and

  2. A report from a psychiatrist, confirming that the treatment is necessary to treat or alleviate a mental illness or psychological distress.

Our psychiatrists are experienced in preparing these assessments and reports to meet ATO requirements, while offering a supportive, respectful space to discuss your emotional well-being and treatment goals.

What the Assessment Involves

  • A 291 psychiatric consultation via telehealth or in-person

  • Discussion of your fertility journey, emotional well-being, and support systems

  • Review of any previous mental health history

  • A clear, written psychiatric report suitable for ATO or clinic submission

All consultations are confidential, and our goal is to ensure you feel understood, supported, and well-prepared for the next stage of your treatment journey.

Referral Information

A referral from your GP under MBS Item 291 is required for this assessment.
